Microsoft's managed stack grew up — cross-platform, open source, and still dominant in enterprise Windows shops.
.NET stuck because Microsoft funded tooling, hiring pools, and enterprise sales together. C# cleaned up Java's rough edges for teams already on Windows. It survived the Silverlight detour and came back stronger with Core.

Objects promised reuse; enterprises bought the promise in bulk. Java gave a portable runtime with real teeth. CORBA and UML-heavy processes gave vendors a decade of workshops.
