One Rust binary that ate pip, venv, pyenv, and Poetry for greenfield Python. OpenAI agreed to acquire the company; a closing notice did not follow the press release.
Why uv (Python toolchain) stuck
uv stuck because Python packaging was a fifteen-year humiliation and a fast lockfile-plus-interpreter tool was the obvious fix. It failed to delete pip from the universe — legacy and downstream still speak requirements.txt — but it won new projects and CI. On 19 March 2026 OpenAI and Astral announced an agreement to acquire, with closing still conditional. The FTC granted early termination of the waiting period on 21 April 2026, which permits a close and is not a closing notice. By a Talk Python interview recorded 2 June 2026, Marsh was the former CEO and the team had joined OpenAI about a month earlier. The durable win is boring installs. The invoice is platform risk if Codex gravity steers the roadmap — not a deed this page pretends to have read.
